CHAPTER NINE

IVY

Ivy had been falling for him. He’d asked her to stay, and she was considering it, despite how scary the idea of living on another planet was. The worst part was that he kept calling her sholani. Per the ship’s databank, zyanthans believed they had a fated mate, that their mating cock would only rise for a sholani. She’d given herself to him, and now he didn’t trust her because her brother was part of the Brotherhood. How the hell was she going to prove herself to Quinnov?

The hurt she was feeling was quickly morphing into anger. If she were his fated mate, then she wouldn’t have to prove herself. While he called her sholani, the word held no meaning to him. It had to her, though. She’d fallen for him. Quinnov was everything she’d ever wanted in a guy. He was gentle, considerate, even funny. But most of all, he cared about her. Hell, the guy had risked his life for her so many times she’d lost count.

Risked his life for her. . . but he didn’t trust her.

When Ivy woke, she quickly showered in the cleansing unit and dressed. It was time to confront Quinnov and tell him what she thought of him, how he’d hurt her. With a deep breath, she opened the door.

She nearly tripped over Quinnov, who was sleeping on the floor in front of the door. His eyes snapped open, and he immediately rose.

“Sholani?” he said, still not fully alert, but clearly worried. “I misspoke yesterday. I need to fix this.”

“Then talk.”

“I trust you, Ivy. I do not trust my people. If your association with the Brotherhood were known to them, they might hurt you. I will not risk you.”

“I’ve been used before, Quinnov. It’s an ugly feeling. You say I’m your sholani, but you don’t seem to want me.”

He ran his hand through his messy hair. He hadn’t slept well either, not that she’d expect him to on the cold hard floor.

“It is complicated. I. . . do not want to lose you, but I’m a scout. My missions last long periods and are often dangerous. And I have my brother to search for.”

“I get it. You need someone who doesn’t mind being stuck on a ship.”

“It is not the place for a mate. Or younglings.”

She hadn’t even thought about that. Children. . . with Quinnov. The idea both warmed and scared her. This was her whole life they were talking about. Despite how scary it was being out here in a universe she didn’t understand, she couldn’t imagine not being with Quinnov. And quite frankly, a relationship shouldn’t be determined by logistics. But that was Quinnov, practical, strategic. She was sure he was a damn good scout. It would be selfish of her to ask him to quit his job or to give up his search for his brother. His people and brother needed him.

She needed him too.

But she wouldn’t take him away from what he loved doing, from his calling as a warrior, as a scout.
